Before making my purchase of the DJI Mavic I, like many others, watched countless minutes of reviews from most of my favorite youtubers. It was a piece of gear I couldn’t justify buying at the time so all I did was watch from the sidelines as others did unboxing videos.
It wasn’t till I turned to my old ways of selling gear that I rarely used to try and pick up a Mavic of my own. If you are a friend of mine you know I usually buy and sell things often, so I dug around and found a few vintage camera lenses and a few gun parts to sell.
Fast forward to now, I have at least 80 plus hours of flight time. That might not look like a lot but given the average battery time of 19-22 minutes of flight time per battery I would say I am out of the intermediate level.
Buying a drone of this tier isn’t something I recommend for your average person, for it will sit there in a backpack or case and collect dust. (unless you have money to burn then why not) I enjoy shooting video and taking pictures and have found it to be on the top list of favorite hobbies which is why I tricked my brain into thinking I needed one.
The more I brought out the Mavic on trail runs (off roading) and weekend adventures I realized that the mavic was more than just a drone. It became a useful tool, often times I used the Mavic during target shooting since the Mavic has ridicules range and amazing video I am able to shoot at 300-500 yards and see where I’m hitting. Another great use is the ability to scout an area, for example, putting the drone in the air and flying out to the direction you are heading could reveal obstacles or road closures to which then you could re route without wasting precious fuel on your vehicle. Dji has seriously changed the game with the range of this drone, flying out a mile and losing no signal is a great feeling knowing you could push out further and still be on the safe side (of course we aren’t talking urban areas here)
I would recommend this drone to…
-Overlanders/Outdoorsie crowd– with its range and good (not great) battery life This drone will surely do more than enough even when not recording amazing aerial footage.
-Professional Photography– Although there are other drones out there, this drone is far more portable and easier to maneuver without much user input. I’ve literary left the drone fly on its own while I set up my main camera using its orbit feature (I’VE ONLY DONE THIS IN RURAL AREAS.) The video footage is exceptional but not the best.
Must have accessories
– Spare Batteries (2 total of 3) yes they are pricey but you will need to buy eventually.
–ND FILTERS (I have the PolarPro Vivid Collection) unless you wanna fly early morning or late evening you will need these to counter the bright sun.
-Drone Protection (My travel case) (my pelican case) I alternate between my small travel case when I wanna run light or my Pelican Case when I need ultimate protection (usually when I go offloading or camping.)
